Bland AI review: pricing and what a small business can build with it
Bland AI is an enterprise voice-agent platform from $0.14 a minute. What a receptionist costs at 200 calls a month, the Enterprise-only gaps, and simpler options.
Bland is a voice AI platform that pitches itself to enterprises and regulated industries: healthcare, insurance, financial services, utilities and government. Its big claim is that it runs entirely on its own speech-to-text, language and voice models rather than renting them from other AI companies (Bland). For a large company, that means one vendor to vet and the option to run it on its own servers.
A small business owner can sign up for free and build a phone agent too. The question this review answers is whether you should, or whether a ready-made AI receptionist would serve you better.

What building a receptionist on Bland involves
You build agents in Bland’s web app by writing instructions in plain language and laying out the conversation’s steps on a visual canvas, or through its API (agent builder). Enterprise customers get Bland’s forward-deployed engineers to build the first agent with them. Everyone else builds it themselves.
For a receptionist, that means writing what the agent knows about your business, mapping out the paths a call can take (new customer, existing customer, emergency, wrong number), connecting booking, and setting up transfers. Booking is documented only for Cal.com (integration tools). If your calendar is Google, Outlook, Square or field-service software, plan on custom work.
It’s a real project for someone who isn’t technical, and the agent needs testing and adjusting as real callers find its gaps.
What it costs at 200 calls a month
Bland’s pricing is simpler than most voice platforms. One per-minute rate covers the language model, transcription and voice, with no token charges or separate provider bills (pricing).
- Start is free: $0.14 a connected minute, an inbound number included, 10 concurrent calls and 100 calls a day, no card required.
- Build costs $299 a month and lowers the rate to $0.12, with 50 concurrent calls and 2,000 calls a day.
Take 200 calls a month at about 3 minutes each, so 600 minutes. On Start that’s $84 a month. Transferred minutes cost an extra $0.05 each, so if your agent passes 50 calls a month to your team and they talk for 3 minutes, add about $7.50. Extra phone numbers are $15 a month each.
Build only pays off at very high volume. Its $0.02-a-minute discount needs about 15,000 minutes a month to cover the $299 fee, so a small business should stay on Start. Start’s cap of 100 calls a day is plenty for most small offices.
At around $90 a month, Bland is cheap to run. Ready-made AI receptionists cost more: Rosie covers 1,000 minutes for $149 a month, Upfirst 300 calls for $159.95. The difference is that those need no building. See our AI receptionist pricing guide for more comparisons.
The Enterprise-only features a receptionist needs
This is the main catch for a small business. Several things a receptionist relies on sit behind Enterprise pricing:
- Warm transfers, where the agent briefs your staff before connecting the caller, are Enterprise-only (warm transfer). Regular transfers work on every plan.
- Texting, such as a booking confirmation or a link, is Enterprise-only, apart from the Agent Phone plan (SMS).
- A HIPAA BAA is Enterprise-only, so a medical or dental office can’t use the free or Build plans with patient information.
The Agent Phone plan ($19.99 a month, unlimited calls and texts in the US and Canada) looks tempting, but it’s sold for bots and autonomous agents that need their own number and is capped at one call at a time and 50 calls a day (Agent Phone plan). One call at a time means the agent can’t take a second caller, which defeats the point of a receptionist.
What callers get
Bland agents can speak over 40 languages and switch language mid-call, Bland says. They record calls and produce a summary and transcript of each (call details). You can keep your existing number by bringing your own Twilio account (bring your own Twilio), and Bland connects to Salesforce, HubSpot and Slack.
How natural the agent sounds, and how well it handles unusual calls, depends on how carefully it was built.
When a ready-made AI receptionist fits better
For most small businesses, a ready-made receptionist is the better fit. Rosie, Upfirst and Dialzara all text callers, transfer calls and book into Google Calendar without building anything. Pick Bland if you have a developer, want one simple per-minute rate without choosing AI providers, and can live without texting and warm transfers, or if you’re a larger regulated organization that wants Bland’s engineers to build it with you.

How it compares
vs Vapi. Vapi lets you pick every model and voice and bills each at cost, which can come out cheaper but is harder to predict. It supports texting through your own Twilio account and warm transfers without an enterprise contract. See Vapi vs Bland AI.
vs Retell AI. Retell is friendlier to non-developers, with an Auto Receptionist setup that starts from your website, and offers a HIPAA BAA at no extra fee.
Verdict
Bland’s single per-minute rate and free Start plan make it easy to try, and about $90 a month for 200 three-minute calls is inexpensive. For a small business receptionist, though, the gaps matter: no texting, no warm transfers and no HIPAA without an Enterprise contract, and booking documented only for Cal.com. Bland is built for enterprises that want a vendor to build alongside them. A small business is better served by a ready-made option from our best AI receptionists for small business.
