Retell AI review: can a small business use it as a receptionist?
Retell AI is a pay-per-minute platform for building AI phone agents. What it really costs at 200 calls a month, what setup takes, and when a ready-made receptionist fits.
Retell AI is one of the most searched names in AI phone answering. It’s important to know what it is before you sign up: a platform for building AI phone agents, not a receptionist you switch on. You (or someone you pay) design the agent, connect a phone number and the tools it uses, and Retell bills per minute for each part of the stack (Retell AI).
That can be a great deal or a frustrating weekend, depending on who’s doing the building.

What it takes to get a receptionist out of Retell
You build an agent in Retell’s dashboard, either as a single prompt that describes how it should behave or as a drag-and-drop conversation flow, usually starting from a template. Developers can do the same through its API and SDKs.
For business owners, Retell offers an Auto Receptionist setup in four self-serve steps that starts from your website. Retell says a standard setup needs no engineering team and that most front desks go live in a few days (Auto Receptionist). If you’d rather not do it yourself, Retell has an implementation team and certified partners who build it for a fee.
Here is the work, whoever does it:
- The script. What the agent says, what it can answer, what it must never promise, when it transfers.
- The stack. Choosing a language model and a voice. Retell supports models from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google, and voices from several providers, each priced differently.
- The phone number. Buy one from Retell for $2 a month, or keep your existing number over SIP.
- The tools. Connecting your calendar (Cal.com, Calendly, GoHighLevel, Google Calendar, Squarespace Scheduling) and CRM (HubSpot, Salesforce, Zoho and others), and setting up call transfers and texts (integrations).
- Testing and upkeep. Calling it yourself, reading transcripts, and fixing the prompt when callers trip it up. That last step never really ends.
A ready-made AI receptionist does all of this for you behind a setup form. With Retell, you get more control in exchange for owning the result.
What it costs at 200 calls a month
Retell charges $0.055 a minute for its own voice infrastructure, billed per second, then adds the language model, the voice and telephony on top. Retell puts the all-in figure at $0.07 to $0.31 a minute (pricing). There’s no platform fee, contract or minimum, and you start with $10 in free credit.
Take 200 calls a month at about 3 minutes each, so 600 minutes:
- Usage: $42 to $186 a month, depending mostly on which language model and voice you pick.
- Phone number: $2 a month.
- Texting: $20 a month plus a cent a text, if the agent sends confirmations.
- Add-ons: knowledge base, denoising and guardrails at half a cent a minute each, if you turn them on.
With texting, call it roughly $65 to $210 a month in fees, or about $45 to $190 without it. That’s cheap next to a human answering service, and in the same range as many ready-made AI receptionists. But notice two things. Silence and hold time are billed, so a caller who puts the agent on hold while they find a pen costs money. And the fees don’t include building and maintaining the agent. If you pay a partner to set it up, add their fee to the comparison.
Compare that with ready-made options at the same volume. Rosie covers 1,000 minutes for $149 a month. Upfirst covers 300 calls for $159.95. Dialzara covers 500 minutes for $199, about $239 once you add 100 minutes at $0.40. None needs building. Our AI receptionist pricing guide runs more of these comparisons.
Calls, transfers and HIPAA
Once built, a Retell agent can do what a receptionist does: answer 24/7, transfer calls, book appointments, send texts, make outbound calls, record calls and write a summary of each. It can speak 55 languages, depending on the voice and speech-recognition providers you choose (language support). Twenty concurrent calls are included.
For medical and dental offices, Retell lets you sign a HIPAA BAA online at no extra fee, and it says it holds SOC 2 Type II (compliance). That’s notably better than Vapi, which charges $2,000 a month for HIPAA.
One caution: Retell’s own pages disagree on some details, such as whether the free allowance is 60 minutes or $10 in credit. Check the pricing page on the day you sign up.

When a ready-made AI receptionist fits better
Choose a ready-made receptionist if:
- nobody on your team wants to write and test prompts;
- you want a known monthly price rather than a sum of model, voice and phone fees;
- you need it running this week without hiring a partner.
Choose Retell if you have a developer or agency, want a custom agent tied into your own systems, or plan to build receptionists for several businesses. It also suits agencies that build and resell AI receptionists.

How it compares
vs Vapi. Both are build-it-yourself platforms. Retell is friendlier to non-developers (dashboard flows, Auto Receptionist) and includes HIPAA at no extra fee; Vapi gives developers more choice of providers. See Retell AI vs Vapi.
vs Bland AI. Bland charges one rate that covers the AI ($0.14 a minute on its free plan), which is simpler to predict, but puts texting and warm transfers on Enterprise.
Verdict
Retell AI is a capable, fairly priced platform for building phone agents, and its Auto Receptionist path makes it more reachable for a business owner than most rivals. Usage at 200 calls a month will likely land under $200. The real cost is the building and upkeep. If you have someone to do that, Retell gives you control and low per-minute rates. If you don’t, a ready-made option from our best AI receptionists for small business will get you answering calls faster, for a similar monthly bill.

- No platform fee or contract: start with $10 in free credits and pay per second of use
- A dashboard builder with templates, plus an Auto Receptionist setup that starts from your website
- Books into Cal.com, Calendly and GoHighLevel and syncs calls to HubSpot, Salesforce and other CRMs
- Keep your existing number over SIP, or buy one for $2 a month
- Self-serve HIPAA BAA at no extra fee, plus SOC 2 Type II

Weaknesses
- You build and tune the agent yourself, or pay an implementation team or partner to do it
- The per-minute price stacks several fees (platform, model, voice, telephony, add-ons), so the real cost depends on choices a business owner may not understand
- Silence and hold time are billed, and numbers, SMS and extra concurrency cost extra each month
- Retell's own pages disagree on details such as the free allowance (60 minutes or $10 in credit)
