The best Vapi alternatives for building or buying an AI receptionist
Vapi alternatives in two groups: voice platforms to build on (Retell AI, Bland AI, Synthflow) and ready-made AI receptionists you can switch on today.

People look for Vapi alternatives for two different reasons, so this list has two halves.
Some are developers or agencies who like building voice agents but want a different price model, HIPAA without a $2,000 monthly add-on, or less to assemble. For them, the alternatives are the other voice-agent platforms, ranked 1 to 3.
Others are business owners who signed up for Vapi expecting a receptionist and found a toolkit. Vapi’s own docs describe an assistant as a system prompt plus tools that you configure (Vapi docs). If nobody on your team wants to own that, skip to the ready-made AI receptionists, ranked 4 to 6. You forward your calls to them and fill in a setup form.
How we ranked them
Every price below is worked out for the same business: 200 calls a month at about 3 minutes each, so 600 minutes. On Vapi that comes to about $49 to $77 in usage, using Vapi’s own estimate of $0.08 to $0.13 a minute all in, plus $29 a month if you want the Core support package (Vapi pricing). That is the bar. Beyond price, we weighed booking, transfers, texting, HIPAA, and how much building stands between signup and a phone that gets answered.
Platforms to build on
1. Retell AI is the closest swap and the easiest for a non-developer. The economics are similar: a $0.055 platform fee per minute, billed per second, plus the model, voice and telephony you choose. Retell puts the total at $0.07 to $0.31 a minute (Retell pricing), so 600 minutes runs about $42 to $186, plus $2 a month for a number. Three things set it apart from Vapi. It has an Auto Receptionist setup that starts from your website. It books into more calendars out of the box (Cal.com, Calendly, GoHighLevel, Google Calendar and Squarespace Scheduling, against Vapi’s Google Calendar and GoHighLevel). And it offers a HIPAA BAA without Vapi’s $2,000-a-month add-on (Retell compliance). Texting costs $20 a month plus a cent a text, where Vapi needs your own Twilio account. Full detail in Retell AI vs Vapi.
2. Bland AI suits builders who are tired of choosing and paying for every part of the stack. Bland runs its own speech, language and voice models and charges one rate that covers them: $0.14 a minute on the free Start plan (Bland pricing). That’s $84 for 600 minutes, plus $0.05 for each transferred minute. The trade-offs are real for a receptionist, though. Texting, warm transfers and the HIPAA BAA sit on Enterprise, booking is documented only for Cal.com, and Start caps you at 100 calls a day. See Vapi vs Bland AI.
3. Synthflow is an alternative only if you’re a contact center or a multi-location brand. It no longer sells self-serve plans or per-minute rates to new customers; every deployment is an annual Enterprise contract quoted after a scoping call, with Synthflow’s engineers available to build and launch the agents (Synthflow pricing). If you left Vapi because you wanted someone else to do the building and you have the volume to justify a contract, it fits. A single small business can’t sign up or try it.
Ready-made AI receptionists
These cost more per minute than Vapi’s raw usage. In exchange, there is nothing to build: you enter your business details, pick a voice and forward your line. Booking, transfers, texts and call summaries are built in.
4. Rosie gives you the most minutes for the money. The $149 Scale plan covers 1,000 minutes, so our 600-minute business has room to grow. Scale is also the plan you want: it adds booking into Google Calendar or Calendly and live transfers, which the $49 Professional plan lacks. Going over your minutes moves you to the next plan rather than charging per minute. It answers in English and Spanish, trains itself from your Google Business Profile and website, and has a 7-day free trial (Rosie pricing).
5. Upfirst prices by the call, which is easier to predict than minutes. 200 calls fit inside the $159.95 Pro plan (300 calls), and every feature is on every plan, including booking into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square or Clio Manage, and warm transfers. Spam and calls under 15 seconds don’t count. The 14-day trial needs no credit card. Like Vapi, it offers a path to HIPAA, but its BAA is on the custom Enterprise plan only.
6. NextPhone is the flat-price option: $199 a month for unlimited inbound calls with no per-minute or overage charges and no setup fee. It books into six calendar apps, answers in 14 languages and has a 7-day free trial. It’s the safest pick if your volume swings, because a busy month costs the same as a quiet one. It doesn’t sign BAAs, so it isn’t for health information.
Which half are you in?
Stay with a platform if you have a developer, need custom logic or integrations, or build agents for clients. Retell AI is the strongest all-round swap, and Bland AI the simplest bill.
Move to a ready-made receptionist if the reason you’re leaving Vapi is the building itself. At 200 calls a month you’ll pay $149 to $199 instead of under $110, and get your phones answered this week. Our best AI receptionists for small business ranks the wider field, and AI voice agent vs AI receptionist explains the choice in more depth. For more on Vapi itself, read our Vapi review.
Alternatives
Our pick
–
A pay-as-you-go platform for building AI phone agents: you set up the agent, number and integrations, and pay per minute for each part of the stack.
Visit Retell AIStrengths
- No platform fee or contract: start with $10 in free credits and pay per second of use
- A dashboard builder with templates, plus an Auto Receptionist setup that starts from your website
- Books into Cal.com, Calendly and GoHighLevel and syncs calls to HubSpot, Salesforce and other CRMs
- Keep your existing number over SIP, or buy one for $2 a month
- Self-serve HIPAA BAA at no extra fee, plus SOC 2 Type II
- Agents can speak 55 languages, depending on the voice and speech-recognition providers chosen
Weaknesses
- You build and tune the agent yourself, or pay an implementation team or partner to do it
- The per-minute price stacks several fees (platform, model, voice, telephony, add-ons), so the real cost depends on choices a business owner may not understand
- Silence and hold time are billed, and numbers, SMS and extra concurrency cost extra each month
- Retell's own pages disagree on details such as the free allowance (60 minutes or $10 in credit)
$19.99/mo
An enterprise voice AI platform running on its own models, with one per-minute rate that covers the AI; self-serve plans start at $0.14 a minute.
Visit Bland AIStrengths
- One per-minute rate covers the AI, so there are no separate model, voice or transcription bills
- Free Start plan with an inbound number and no card required
- Runs on its own models, with on-premises or VPC deployment for enterprise customers
- Speaks 40+ languages and can switch language mid-call
- HIPAA with a BAA, SOC 2 Type II and GDPR for regulated businesses
Weaknesses
- Pitched at enterprises: the receptionist is yours to build, and hands-on help from Bland's engineers comes with Enterprise
- Texting, warm transfers and the HIPAA BAA are Enterprise-only (texting also comes with the Agent Phone plan)
- The Start plan caps you at 100 calls a day, and transferred minutes cost extra
- Lower rates need the $299-a-month Build plan
- Booking is documented only for Cal.com
An enterprise voice AI platform for contact centers and multi-location brands, sold only as a custom annual contract with no per-minute rate or trial.
Visit SynthflowStrengths
- Synthflow's engineers can build and launch the agents for you

- HIPAA with a BAA, SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and US or EU data hosting
- Agents speak 30+ languages and can switch language mid-call
Weaknesses
- Enterprise only: an annual contract with no published price, no trial and no self-serve signup
- Built for contact centers and multi-location brands rather than a single small business
- Launch takes weeks, depending on integrations, phone system and security review
- Choosing OpenAI models requires an Enterprise plan; Claude and custom models aren't supported
$49/mo

- Trains itself from your Google Business Profile and website, with setup in as little as 10 minutes
- English and Spanish, call recordings, transcripts and summaries on every plan, plus iOS and Android apps
Weaknesses
- Calendar booking and live call transfers start on the $149 Scale plan; Professional only texts a booking link
- Direct calendar integrations are limited to Google Calendar and Calendly
- CRMs connect only through Zapier for now; direct CRM integrations are still in the works
- Call recordings are deleted automatically after 30 days
$24.95/mo

- Spam, robocalls and calls under 15 seconds don't count toward your calls
- 14-day trial (up to 100 calls) with no credit card, and month-to-month plans
- Books into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly, Acuity, Square and Clio Manage, with Zapier and Make for the rest
Weaknesses
- Small plans fill up fast: 30 calls on Starter, then $1.50 per extra call
- No refund if you prepay a year and cancel
- BAAs for compliance are only on the custom Enterprise plan
- No native mobile app; the web app can be saved to a phone's home screen
- Each extra agent, for another location or business line, adds $9.95 a month
$199/mo
An AI receptionist for law firms and service businesses with unlimited calls at a flat $199 a month, no per-minute fees and a 7-day free trial.

Weaknesses
- Doesn't sign BAAs, and its terms forbid use with protected health information
- Hasn't completed a SOC 2 audit of its own
- CRM updates and Zapier, Make and API access start at the $299 Growth plan
- 2-way texting and calling from your business number need the $599 Scale plan
- No toll-free numbers
