Abby Connect review: AI and human receptionists on one plan

Abby Connect sells an AI receptionist and live US receptionists on one minute plan. What callers hear, what 200 calls a month costs, and who it suits.

Abby Connect started as a live answering service and now sells an AI receptionist alongside its people. The point of the service is that you don’t have to pick: you decide per type of call whether the AI answers, a human receptionist answers, or the AI starts and hands off to a person on the same line (Abby homepage). The human receptionists work from Abby’s office in Las Vegas.

That makes it one of the few options on this site for an owner who wants AI for the routine calls but isn’t ready to let a bot handle a new client, an upset customer or an emergency on its own.

Abby Connect pricing: Starter $164 for 50 Abby Minutes, Essential $329 for 100, Professional $599 for 200 (most popular), Growth $1,380 for 500, each with a Start free trial button

What callers hear

The AI picks up on the first ring, day or night, and answers in English or Spanish, detecting which one the caller speaks. It answers questions about your business, screens and transfers calls, takes messages and books appointments. When a call needs a person, it warm-transfers to one of Abby’s receptionists or to your own team without the caller having to hang up and call back (AI receptionist page). Abby’s page has a sample call you can play before you sign up, which is worth two minutes of your time.

Afterwards you get the call by text, email, the AbbyGO app for iPhone and Android, or the my.abby.com portal, with a transcript, an AI summary, a sentiment score and the recording.

What it costs at real call volumes

Every plan is a bucket of “Abby Minutes”. A minute a human answers uses one. A minute the AI answers uses half. So the same plan stretches up to twice as far if you let the AI take most calls (pricing). Overage is billed at the plan’s Abby Minute rate, and AI minutes still count half.

Take a business with 200 calls a month at about 3 minutes each, so 600 minutes of talk time:

  • All AI. 600 AI minutes use 300 Abby Minutes. Professional ($599 for 200) plus 100 extra Abby Minutes at $3.00 comes to about $899 a month, roughly $4.50 a call. Growth ($1,380 for 500) would cover it outright but costs more.
  • Half AI, half human. 300 human minutes plus 300 AI minutes use 450 Abby Minutes. Professional with 250 extra comes to about $1,349, a little under Growth’s $1,380.
  • All human. 600 Abby Minutes. Growth plus 100 extra at $2.76 is about $1,656.

A smaller shop with 50 calls a month at 3 minutes, all on AI, uses 75 Abby Minutes: Starter at $164 plus 25 extra at $3.28 lands near $246.

Abby itself puts AI answering at about $1.65 a minute on Starter and $1.38 on Growth. That is the catch. Even all-AI, Abby costs well above AI-only receptionists. Sameday AI, for example, works out to under $0.90 per included minute. You are paying for the humans standing behind the AI, whether a given call reaches them or not. Long calls hurt too: billing is by the minute, so a 10-minute caller costs ten times a 1-minute one. Our AI receptionist pricing guide explains how per-minute, per-call and flat plans compare.

How Abby Minutes work: human answering 1 Abby Minute = 1 minute, AI answering 1 Abby Minute = 2 minutes, and a Professional plan example of 200 human, 300 mixed or 400 AI minutes

Contracts, setup and trial

The terms are friendly. Plans are month to month, there’s no setup fee, and every plan comes with a free trial, though Abby doesn’t say how long it lasts (FAQ). You keep your existing business number. Volumes above Growth go on a custom Enterprise plan.

Calendars and software

The AI books into Google Calendar, Calendly, Acuity Scheduling and Microsoft Outlook. One detail to check before you buy: the human receptionists book appointments only through Calendly. If your calendar is Acuity or Google and you expect people to book on overflow calls, ask Abby how that will work in your setup.

Beyond calendars, Abby connects to the usual small-business CRMs and tools (Salesforce, HubSpot, Zoho, Pipedrive, QuickBooks, Slack and others). It doesn’t list field-service software such as ServiceTitan or Jobber, so a home-service company that wants jobs booked straight into its dispatch board should look at tools built for that, like Sameday AI or Avoca.

Abby can also make outbound calls, such as follow-ups and appointment reminders (outbound calls).

Healthcare and privacy

Abby’s HIPAA compliance options cover human answering only, not the AI (pricing). A medical or dental office that needs every call handled under HIPAA would route those calls to people and pay the full human rate. Abby says call data stays in the US and is never sold or shared, and that its AI runs on third-party speech and language models.

Who Abby Connect suits

Abby makes the most sense for businesses where a wrong answer is expensive: law firms taking new-client calls, medical and dental offices, property managers handling maintenance emergencies, and home-service companies with after-hours urgent calls. For them, the AI handles hours, directions and simple bookings, and anything sensitive goes to a person in real time.

It fits poorly if you mostly want cheap answering for simple calls. If nearly every call is “are you open Saturday” or “book me for Tuesday”, an AI-only receptionist will cost a fraction of Abby’s AI minute. And if you want only people, a human service like AnswerConnect publishes plans that cost less per human minute, while Ruby charges more.

How it compares

vs Ruby. Both offer US-based live receptionists. Ruby’s cheapest published minute is about $3.45 on its 500-minute plan and it has no AI answering calls on its own. Abby’s human minutes are cheaper, from $2.76 on Growth, and the AI option halves the cost again.

vs AnswerConnect. Human-only by policy, with published plans from $350 for 200 minutes, about $1.75 a human minute against Abby’s $2.76 to $3.28. There’s no AI option to bring the price down further.

vs AI receptionists. Our best AI receptionists for small business ranking covers tools that cost far less per call and transfer the calls they can’t handle to your own team. For a broader view of the trade-off, see AI receptionist vs answering service.

Verdict

Abby Connect is a sensible bridge for an owner moving from a human answering service toward AI. The minute bucket is easy to understand, the terms are month to month with no setup fee, and the warm handoff to a real person on the same call is the feature most AI-only tools can’t match. The price of that safety net is steep: around $900 a month for 200 three-minute calls, even if the AI answers all of them. Use the free trial, listen to how your own callers react, and check how much of your volume truly needs a human before you pick a plan.
