Goodcall review: an AI answering service billed per caller, not per minute
Goodcall prices its AI phone agent by unique callers, from $79 a month. What that means at 200 calls a month, what callers hear, and who it suits.
Goodcall is a self-serve AI answering service for small businesses. You set it up by describing your business to Gabi, Goodcall’s built-in assistant, by typing or talking. Gabi writes the greeting, the questions and the steps, runs practice calls, and only publishes a change once you approve it (how it works).
What makes Goodcall different is the bill. It charges by unique callers each month, not by minutes or calls. One phone number counts once a month however often it calls and however long it talks, and spam and wrong numbers don’t count (FAQ).

Who it’s for
Goodcall suits solo operators and small shops that miss calls while they’re on a job and want a bill they can predict: a plumber under a sink, a groomer with a dog on the table, a contractor on a roof. It also suits any business whose calls run long, where per-minute pricing adds up.
It fits less well if many of your callers speak Spanish (it answers in English only), if you need a toll-free or Canadian number (local US numbers only), or if your bookings live in software other than Google Calendar.
What callers hear
The agent answers 24/7 and tells callers they’re speaking with an AI assistant. It answers questions, captures the lead, books into Google Calendar, and transfers the caller to up to three people in turn, retrying busy lines. Every call is recorded and transcribed, and leads are texted and emailed to you.
One quirk: your Goodcall number can send texts but can’t receive replies yet. If a customer answers the confirmation text, that reply won’t reach you there.
What it costs at real call volumes
There are three published plans, all month to month with no setup fee:
- Starter, $79 for 100 unique callers, then $0.79 each. Goodcall estimates this is about 150 calls.
- Growth, $129 for 500 unique callers, then $0.26 each. About 750 calls.
- Scale, $299 for 2,000 unique callers, then $0.15 each. About 3,000 calls.
Take 200 calls a month at about 3 minutes each, 600 minutes in all. Minutes don’t matter here. What matters is how many different numbers call. If 200 calls come from about 150 people, Starter costs $79 plus 50 extra callers at $0.79, or about $119. Growth covers you for $129 with lots of headroom, about $0.65 a call. At that volume Growth is the safer pick: it costs $10 more and you stop thinking about overage.
Compare that with per-minute services at the same 600 minutes. Dialzara comes to about $239 and My AI Front Desk to about $189. Per-call Upfirst is $159.95. Goodcall is among the cheapest options on this site at that volume, and the gap grows if your calls run longer than 3 minutes.
There’s no annual plan, no pause and nothing below $79. You can downgrade to the free demo agent instead of cancelling outright.

Setup and trial
There’s no trial in the usual sense. You build and test a free demo agent, talk to it, and change it through Gabi until you like it. You start paying the day you add a phone number. That’s a fair way to try it: you hear exactly what your callers would hear before any money changes hands.
Each plan includes a local US number. To keep your existing number, you forward your line to Goodcall. Porting your number in isn’t self-serve yet (FAQ).
What it books into
Appointments go into Google Calendar. Leads can go to Google Sheets or HighLevel, and to thousands of other apps through Zapier. For something more custom, Goodcall can call an API or connect to an MCP server, which is a job for whoever handles your tech. Starter allows one connected external tool; Growth allows five.
If you run ServiceTitan, Jobber or a practice-management system and want jobs booked straight into it, look at an industry tool instead; see our best AI receptionists for home services.
When the AI can’t handle a call
It transfers the call to your people, trying up to three in order. Goodcall’s pages describe transfers to your own team, so ask what happens when nobody on your list picks up before you rely on it. If you want a person to step in when your own team can’t, look at Smith.ai or Abby Connect.

Healthcare
Goodcall says it is SOC 2 and HIPAA compliant, but it signs a business associate agreement (BAA) only on the $299 Scale plan or Enterprise (FAQ). A small clinic that needs a BAA pays Scale’s price even at low volume.
How it compares
vs Upfirst. Upfirst counts calls, not callers, but doesn’t bill spam or calls under 15 seconds. It answers in many more languages, books into more calendars (including Outlook, Calendly and Clio), and has a 14-day trial with no card.
vs Rosie. Rosie starts at $49 and answers in English and Spanish, but booking and live transfers need its $149 plan.
vs Simple Phones. Also self-serve and priced per call, from $49 for 100 calls.
Verdict
Goodcall is a good fit for an English-speaking small business that wants a predictable bill and has callers who ring back or talk a while. Pricing by unique caller is generous, every price is published, there’s no contract or setup fee, and building the agent by talking to Gabi is about as easy as setup gets. The limits are real, though: English only, local US numbers only, no self-serve porting, Google Calendar as the only direct calendar, and no replies to texts. If those don’t affect you, it’s hard to beat on price; compare it with the others on our cheap AI receptionist page.
